Message From the AMCA President . . .

Jennifer Pena, AMCA PresidentI would first like to say that I have been a member of AMCA and IIMC for many moons, and I am amazed at the support, enthusiasm and energy you all have in the continual efforts of visualizing and moving the organization forward each and every year. My goal this year is to encourage everyone to be All-In, empower yourselves with knowledge, education, challenge yourselves, and allow for the fear of embarrassment. Yes, I said it. Embarrassment, like fear, is an obstacle to growth and transformation in all areas of life. AMCA is meant to be a safe harbor, a place without judgment or ridicule. To learn, we must ask.

If you have ever watched the Netflix series “Suits” one episode refers to “The Man in the Arena.” This is actually a passage from the speech Theodore Roosevelt gave at the Sorbonne in Paris on April 23, 1910. The speech was titled “Citizenship in a Republic.” The famous passage emphasizes the importance of taking action and having the courage to face criticism and failure in the pursuit of one’s goals. Fear holds us back until we embrace that fear and move forward. As you read this excerpt from his speech, I exhort you to be All-In, challenge yourself, and have the courage to be vulnerable as you dare greatly this year. Be All-In, whether for 3 months, 6 months, or the year. Then examine what you have learned and how that time made you feel. It should feel amazing!

“It is not the critic who counts; not the person who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit goes to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood. The man who strives valiantly, who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions who spends himself in worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory or defeat.”

So, this year take advantage of the educational opportunities offered by AMCA and IIMC. Step up for yourself and those around you. Be vulnerable, keep an open mind, and never stop learning because life never stops teaching. Success is no accident: it is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all…. It’s all in the Journey. I look forward to the upcoming year and celebrating your accomplishments that build the foundation for your growth and success.
